IN FOCUS: Wildfire Season Not Over, Warns Commissioner Franz

News Date:

SEPTEMBER 21, 2023

Despite cooler weather, Commissioner of Public Lands, Hilary Franz, asks Washington residents to avoid starting outdoor fires, while landscape is still extremely dry

Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz is asking members of the public to help prevent wildfire starts during as fall comes in. Citing elevated temperatures and dry fuel conditions, Franz highlighted the need to protect both residents and fire fighters from avoidable wildfire danger.

“The recent fires on the west side of our state reminds us that fire season is not over yet. As we’ve seen the past couple years with the Bolt Creek and Nakia Creek fires, autumn still holds potential for large wildfires that can impact broad areas of Washington,” said Commissioner Franz. “We’re seeing fires rage through wetter forests, even the Olympic Rainforest. Even though it’s been cooler, we still haven’t seen much rain, and until we do our forests remain vulnerable to wildfires that can threaten homes and fill our skies with smoke. This year has been one of the most destructive ever for the people of Washington. I’m urging everyone to continue their vigilance by not starting fires outdoors to keep our state and our firefighters safe.”

So far in 2023, Washington has had 1,855 wildfires burn 155,503 acres, which is ahead of the typical pace for number of fires but below average for acres burned. DNR’s 10-year average is 1,417 fires and 288,682 acres burned.

However, it’s also been one of the most destructive fire seasons on record, with more than 400 homes burned by wildfires across Washington, including the homes burned by the Gray and Oregon Road fires in Spokane County last month.

Moderated weather conditions are allowing firefighters to make progress containing existing wildfires, with the largest active fire being the Cowlitz Complex primarily in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest outside Randle, which is 40 percent contained at 715 acres.

Additionally, fuels across the state remain primed to burn at any time. Despite longer, cooler nights, fire conditions in the western Cascades are still abnormally dry, according to DNR fuel moisture experts.

Many of the Fire Danger Rating areas throughout central Washington are high. Most of western Washington is now rated high or very high for fire danger.--DNR PRESS RELEASE

2) IN FOCUS: Secretary Mayorkas Delivers Remarks at Ukrainian Cultural Artifacts Repatriation Ceremony.

Source link: https://www.dhs.gov/news/2023/09/21/secretary-mayorkas-delivers-remarks-ukrainian-cultural-artifacts-repatriation

Secretary Mayorkas delivered the following remarks at a repatriation ceremony at the Ukrainian Embassy to the United States alongside President Volodymyr Zelensky. These remarks are presented as prepared for delivery.

Our common understanding and appreciation of history is often shaped by the objects and artifacts that remain.

The Department of Homeland Security’s history – and an important chapter in our nation’s history – can be told in a twisted piece of metal from the wreckage of the World Trade Center on 9/11. That is why such a piece is the first thing anyone who enters our Headquarters sees.

Tangible pieces of history pass down a story to all who consider them – a story that unites us, and bonds us, and can instill a sense of resolve and often pride in us.

The United States knows this; Ukraine knows this. Russia knows this, too – and they know the uniquely devastating, demoralizing, divisive impact of separating a culture from its tangible history.

That is why, when President Biden told President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people they have America’s full support against Russia’s unprovoked war of aggression, it entailed more than military and intelligence support. It entailed more than emergency food aid and budget lifelines; more than deterring cyberattacks; more than the support the Department of Homeland Security has given to facilitate the safe transfer of people and goods across the Ukrainian border.

Full support also means helping to safeguard Ukraine’s independent identity and inspiring history against Russian efforts to appropriate and erase both.

Our Department has been extraordinarily proud to support this effort. Our Uniting for Ukraine initiative has provided safe haven and security for more than 154,000 Ukrainians – and in them, their ideals, their culture, their customs, their artistry, and more.

In small ways, we are also working to preserve Ukraine’s tangible history, as the 10 axes, swords, and daggers we are repatriating to the Ukrainian people today exemplify.

For hundreds of years – and in the case of two swords, for over 2,000 years – they were Ukrainian relics, of Ukrainian history, on Ukrainian land. Each artifact was stolen, illegally taken from Ukraine, and brought to Russia. Each was shipped by a Russian trafficker to the United States, on its way to a buyer. Each package was flagged by our National Targeting Center, intercepted en route at our New York City Port of Entry, and seized by U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers.

Thanks to their work, as well as the work of our Immigrations and Customs Enforcement and Homeland Security Investigations agents, each artifact is being returned to the people and the nation of Ukraine today.

Once again, these artifacts, which embody the unique history of Ukraine and the centuries-old resolve of its people, will reside at home where they belong.

It is my sincere hope that, now, these enduring pieces of history also will forever tell the story of the bond between Ukraine and the United States of America.

I want to again thank our entire Department of Homeland Security workforce for their work supporting Ukraine, and I want to thank President Zelensky, Ambassador Markarova, and the Embassy of Ukraine, for the honor of returning these artifacts in person. Slava Ukraini.

BIBLE VERSE: Romans 5:3-4 (New International Version)

Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

Weekly Bible Lesson:

Dangers of Study Bibles

There are many good study Bibles available today. These are Bibles which have notes that give helpful interesting and interesting information about the Bible text. However, these extra study notes sometimes are used to teach false doctrines. For example, the Scofield Study Bible has notes which are designed to teach the false doctrine of premillennialism. Because some men twist the Scriptures to their own destruction (2 Peter 3:16), they use the notes in study Bibles to convert other people to their false ways.--tftw

THIS WEEK'S VIDEOS

Parental Advisory: The EXPLICIT Plot to Control Your Kids

Our basic rights are under attack, and parents face a terrifying question: Who gets to raise children – you or the government? Glenn highlights an alarming new law in California that wants to FORCE parents to affirm children’s gender dysphoria … or ELSE. This overrides decades of Supreme Court precedents for the protection of parental rights. Glenn warns that if this is allowed to stand, it’s a terrifying intrusion of government into the home and a major warning sign of even more tyranny to come. For many of our elected officials, the Constitution only seems to matter depending on the context. This Pandora’s box was cracked open by the worst American leaders during the 2020 pandemic. Now some of them are apparently longing for the good old days when they tried to play God with your unalienable rights. The New Mexico governor’s gun ban is just one of several stunning recent assaults on the First and Second Amendments. What are law-abiding Americans supposed to do when elected left-wing officials act as if the Constitution is optional at best and irrelevant at worst? These attacks from the Left are relentless. Resistance must be just as relentless.
