Coincidental or what? Port to review relationship with Platypus

Readers, talk about your strange coincidence, or irony. While fishing for topics to write about today. I checked to see if the Port of Port Angeles had published their agenda. Low and behold on their agenda during their work session meeting before their 1:PM meeting on Monday this little item was on it: Platypus Marine Lease/Port Relations
According to the staff memo provided:
Platypus Marine, Inc. (“Platypus”) has been a Port tenant since June 1, 1995 (its
predecessor was AM Marine). Platypus currently employs approximately 80 employees
and provides marine repair and manufacturing services for the recreational, commercial
and governmental sectors. Under its current written lease agreement, Platypus leases 3.89 acres and pays a monthly lease rate of $6,795 plus leasehold tax. The lease states that rate is to remain in effect until May 30, 2010, at which time the rate was to be renegotiated. To date,
there have not been any successful rate renegotiation. Platypus also uses the Port’s
travel lift pier for $175 per lift. ( see full memo)

Now readers as I mentioned yesterday, I support the sale of the 5 acre property. I already gotten a response from a former Port Commission Candidate saying that would be a big mistake! I am quite aware readers that the Port earns income from the leases and lease hold tax. But, I believe they can still earn income from property taxes, and utilities right? What we are talking about here readers is just 5 acres! Do we want to run the risk of them pulling up stakes and moving somewhere else were they will be able to buy their own land, and having 80 people lose their jobs? Now, some would argue let them! The Port can simply fine another topside repair company who will be willing to lease port property rather having their own land. Now Rayonier purchase a chunk of shoreline property years ago, can't remember if it was from the port or city. But, the point is the property now sits barren and empty now, years after the mill closed down. Some would argue, whoever sold the property to Rayonier don't want to make the same mistakes twice. That's assuming of course either the port or city sold it in the first place years ago.
Yes, those are all valid arguments against selling five acres to Platypus. But, all these arguments ignore the human element, that is the cost of jobs, and yet another business moving out all over five acres.

Now, as for the regular meeting which didn't have the issue with Platypus Marine.
The highlight item on their agenda Monday is besides swearing in Steve Burke as new Port Commission which the port issued the following press release after he was selected, long after both this publication, and the PDN ran stories on it.
Commission Appoints Mr. Steve Burke as the District 2 Commissioner
Today at a special meeting of the Board of Commissioners, Commissioner McAleer and Commissioner Beauvais unanimously voted to appoint Mr. Steve Burke to the vacant District 2 Commissioner position.
Commissioner Burke will be sworn in as a Port Commissioner on Monday, March 14th at the 9:00AM work session. Commissioner Burke will complete the term of former Commissioner Jim Hallett until a new commissioner is elected during the November 2017 general election. Commissioner Burke is currently the executive director of the William Shore Memorial Pool.

Burke apparently won't be sworn in until after the work session which the Port will review the relations with Platypus, but, I am sure he will be able to weight in on this issue. It will be interesting where he leans on the issue of selling port property outright to a private business.
Nevertheless the highlight item or items that Burke will be part of is: Clallam County EDC Contract

CITY TO CONSIDER TOLLING AGREEMENT FOR HARBOR CLEAN UP
Another topic in the City Council agenda that caught my eye was this staff memo entitled:
PA Harbor Cleanup Tolling Agreement for Potentially Responsible Parties (PRP’s)
Summary: There are two separate categories of claims arising from contamination in Port Angeles harbor, or any similar harbor. The Agreement for consideration by City Council tonight deals with just one such claim – a claim made under federal law for natural resources damages (NRD). The western harbor group, of which the City is part, asserts that the statute of limitations has run on that claim, but the federal Trustees who made the NRD claim disagree. The purpose of the proposed Agreement is simply to toll the statute of limitations issues, which means to suspend those issues just as they exist now while reserving all parties’ rights and positions. The purpose of tolling the statute of limitations is to allow the parties time for settlement negotiations of NRD claims. If the PRPs enter into the Tolling Agreement and commence negotiations, and settlement negotiations fail, then nothing is lost. However, if the negotiations are successful, it would benefit all parties.
Funding: No funding is necessary for this Tolling Agreement.
Recommendation: Authorize the City Manager to enter into the attached Tolling Agreement and to make minor modifications to the Agreement if necessary
Editor's note: That's good this tolling won't cost us anything, but, I can't help thinking that this contamination in the harbor might be from our fluoridated water? See if they ever admit to that right?

NOW THAT THEY HAVE A FULL TEAM, WILL THEY ALLOW PLATYPUS TO BUY LAND?

The Port of Port Angeles made their selection of who is going to fill the unexpired term of Jim Hallet who resigned from the Port Commission earlier this year. Out of six applicants who was left after the seventh withdrew his application. Steve Burke was selected during a special meeting which was held on Friday. Burke will serve the remainder of Hallet's term which will expire next year.
Now the question is can they start pulling together a marketing campaign that will bring in much needed business and trade for the Port which will create much needed jobs? Will they now allow Platypus marine to buy the land they need outright, so they can expand? Will they find a new air service to Seattle? As you recall the article in the Peninsula Daily News under the headline regarding Platypus Marine: "Platypus Marine looks to buy 5 acres for expansion; Port of Port Angeles prefers lease for site" PDN dated March 12, 2015. Quoting from the article: "Linnabary said only outright ownership could ensure company control of the site."

(pictured here) is hoping that the new commission will allow the sale of the property.

While I was departing the meeting after hearing the Port decision in selecting Burke I told Linnabury that I supported his quest for buying the five acres of property. He said as I left, "I am not giving up, I would hate to have to move my business somewhere else." 

Burke will be officially sworn in during the Port's regular meeting on Monday, however there's not agenda issued for that meeting thus far.

CITY TO CHOOSE ETHICS COMMITTEE FILED AGAINST MAYOR

According to the staff memo in next week's City Council meeting:

On March 1, 2016, a complaint was filed against Mayor Patrick Downie alleging that they had

violated the City’s Code of Ethical Conduct as outlined in Chapter 2.78 of the Port Angeles

Municipal Code. As directed by the ordinance, the City Clerk forwarded the complaint to the

City Attorney, City Manager and the full Council.

This is the third complaint filed against City Council members in the past month. The first two

complaints allege that one or more Council members violated the ethics code during the February 2nd City Council meeting. This third complaint alleges the Mayor violated the code of ethics during the January 5 and January 19, 2016 Council meetings.

As outlined in the Code, Council is to take the next step is to:

1. Forward the complaint to the Board of Ethics to investigate and make recommendations

for disposition. The Board’s findings will be forwarded to the Council. 

The composition of the 3-member board is to be made up of at least one member who is a former judicial officer or has expertise in ethics acquired through education or experience. At least one member shall have experience in municipal government. The third member may be any of the pre- approved applicants.

On February 16, Council chose Grant Meiner, Danetta Rutten and Frank Prince from a pool of

pre-approved applicants to serve on the Board of Ethics to review the first complaint. That board met on March 8. They are tentatively scheduled to meet again on March 24.

On March 1, Council chose Ken Williams, Jerry Dean and William Yucha from a pool of pre-approved applicants to serve on the Board of Ethics to review the second complaint. That board was scheduled to meet on March 15. 

Editorial Comment: Another spotlight item on next week's City Council agenda is a verbal report from Council member regarding the ad hoc committee on alternatives to the fluoride issue. I have to wonder like someone pointed out during last meeting, which by the way reflects my sediment that when or if they come up with alternatives, will they ignore those suggestions, like they did with that straw poll (Citizen Advisory Poll) which the majority of citizens who voted in that poll said no more fluoride? Will it be just another pointless exercise wasting time and money? A feel good measure folks so we angry peasants and feel they we matter.

Which brings to mind another topic on the agenda of the city council next week: Indigenous People’s Day Update

According to the staff memo in the city agenda packet: 

Council member Brad Collins, City Manager Dan McKeen, and Director of Community and

Economic Development Nathan West have met with several local tribal Councils to gather input

on choosing a special day or week to recognize indigenous people. By gathering a representative from each tribe/Council, a collective group can work towards consensus on the best approach to appropriate recognition. It has been expressed that the Longhouse at the Peninsula College would be an ideal location, and staff will begin to find a time that works for all, hopefully in April or May of this year. While construction is not set to wrap up until early 2017, the Longhouse staff have agreed to host the small meeting. Time frame for recognition has been initially discussed to take place sometime during the summer. 

Editorial Note: As you recall readers this started last year when Council member Sissi Bruch, while running for County Commissioner at the time, suggested that the city adopt the same proclamation as the City of Seattle had done, replacing Columbus Day with Indigenous Day. 

That move didn't go over to well with the Italian community there in Seattle, and I imagine not many Italians who lives here weren't to thrilled with being slapped in the face, whether or not you liked Columbus he did discovered this continent. I even wrote during that time, if they really want to honor the native culture they should do so without dishonoring the Italian people. I suggested then in this publication, that maybe they should pick a day during the summer time, and from what I read in the memo looks like someone was listening.

I think everyone involved on the ethic committee needs to listen to their conscience, and judge for themselves that they are really up to the task of showing no favoritism in anyway shape or form.

A PLEASANT SURPRISE IN THE MAIL TODAY...

Readers,
As you recall I wrote about my little mishap going to church last Sunday, involving my electronic wheelchair, and the rain poncho which I was wearing. Apparently it was from someone from here in Port Angeles that sent it. I gotten an email from my benefactor. So, it wasn't from someone in Tenn,. as I thought. No matter it was a nice gesture nevertheless no matter where it comes from.
So many thanks to my benefactor who sent me this nice gift of a rain poncho.

SHOULD THE CITY CODE OF CONDUCT BE REVIEWED AGAIN?

That question was raised during the last city council meeting on Tuesday by, Councilman Whetham. Another point which I agree with readers. This is all stemming from the Feb. 2nd meeting of the city council. Which now has produced four ethics complaints; The mayor, Kidd, Gase, and the city attorney.
As noted before lot's of miscues were done during that meeting. The mayor should have chaired that meeting over the phone, if he couldn't make it there physically. Which he was on the two way phone. He handed off the chore to the deputy mayor. Now as for Whetham, I didn't much appreciate of his phrase: "The real mayor" which opened up the assumption that he was implying that Kidd's position was "fake". However, he short of made up for that during this Tuesday's meeting when he kept asking the city attorney about protocol during the opening of the public comment session. And he, noted that the public sessions were control by the mayor, not by the full council. However, if he wanted to go a step further, he could have declared that entire Feb. 2nd meeting null and void because it wasn't following protocol, the mayor was on the phone and could have chaired that meeting, and he should not have passed it off to the deputy mayor. Whetham could have asked for that entire meeting be redone. He had that opportunity to do that on Tuesday, if he was really concerned about following protocol. But he didn't. And yes, the council should follow the Roberts Rule of order Lee.

Readers, Whethem had an opportunity back on that meeting Feb. 2 to show the public he was concerned in following protocol.  Knowing that the mayor was on the phone, and could have chaired the meeting on the phone. Should have call point of order, and asked why the deputy mayor was chairing the meeting and not the mayor, which in essence he was by the two way phone. Whetham also could have declared that entire Feb. 2nd meeting null and void, and asked for that entire meeting be done over.

Now, the part I agree with is that he mentioned during the discorse of protocal discussion Tuesday night he stated perhaps they need to review those code of conducts. As you recall they had to review those code of conduct because of Councilman Max Mania. Yes, the very one Lee, and me was to run against during that election close to three years now, but Mania, decided not to run again, which I found convenient, and left town.
What the current code of conduct has done in essence censored speech from council members, and gave then an excuse to duct questions from the media, and public alike on policy decisions.
And we all witness the results of that during the last city council election, when Kidd kept ducting questions about her views on fluoridation, which were apparent by her vote in favor of continuing adding fluoridation to the city water supply.

Now according to the minutes which were approved during Tuesday's meeting on the second meeting in Feb.
It states: "City Manager Dan McKeen spoke about Public Comment guidelines contained in the Council Rules of Procedure. He noted there had been a mistake when the most recent version of the Rules of Procedure was drafted, in which the “15 minute” guideline for public comment periods had been omitted in error. Staff reviewed information that was presented to Council in July 2015 when the body adopted a second public comment period. In reviewing memos and minutes as well as listening to the audio recording of the July meeting, staff reaffirmed Council’s wishes to add a second public comment period to all agendas with comments limited to no more than three minutes per person, and a total of 15 minutes for each comment period, with the Mayor’s discretion to lengthen or shorten. Manager McKeen noted that all supporting documentation about this matter would be put on the City’s website for the public."

Now, Readers as long as I been covering the city council meetings since I started publishing a news blog close to twenty years, the mayor had always set the time of the public comment session, if you look back over the years on the agenda they always had that little note saying that the mayor will set the time of the public comment session. Maybe that changed during the course of the time I stop for two years in publishing and attending any meetings. But, in times passed that was the standard the the mayor set the time of the public comment session.
Now it looks like the council will be meeting on how to follow protocol. WAIT! Shouldn't they have known how to follow protocol before they took office? What's with that readers?!

The Port did held a special meeting on Friday interviewing the Port Commission candidates, no word as of yet who was selected from the seven who applied for the posting as of yet.
The Port typically holds their first meeting on the second week of the month, thus far no agenda has been released.  Their first meeting of the month will be on the 14th I was told be Port Commissioner McAleer, since the second Monday falls on the 14th, my bad on that one.
However I did write to Port Commissioner McAleer asking if they made any selection of a Port Commissioner to take over Jim Hallet's posting/
Here is what she wrote back:   No we have not selected a third commissioner. We published a schedule many weeks ago. According to the published schedule we will make that decision on March 11th if all goes well. However, one applicant (Brent Berry) was out of town yesterday so we are hoping to interview him on Tuesday. Connie and I are doing reference checks between Tuesday and Thursday.

UPDATE ON ETHIC COMPLAINT FILE AGAINST MAYOR

As you recall readers I wrote both the Mayor, and Marloee Smith regarding the ethic compliant filed against the mayor. I asked if  Smith had any comments regarding the Mayor's comments about the complaint filed, which he mentioned her by name.
She wrote back with a one word reply:  hubris otherwise, no comment.

Mayor Downie's reply:  I really don't have any additional comments to offer at this time.  Peter, inasmuch as the complaint will be taken up by the Ethics Committee members very soon I hope, it is advisable I refrain from further comments.

The statement made by Downie was in the Peninsula Daily News Friday's edition.

Quoting again: “I regret that across America, as well as here in Port Angeles, political discussion in any number of public settings has become so discordant. 

“I'm saddened that there would be those, including Marolee, who would misinterpret my attempts to quiet the tone of certain voices during the council meetings referred to in the ethics complaint, with trying to silence their legitimate right to speak.

Editorial Note: Now, why I would re-run a statement from Congressman Kilmer on storm water run off you might ask, since I already ran it yesterday? That got me to wondering, how does our Congressional, and State leaders feel about the subject of fluoridation of municipalities? I wrote to our congressional delegation, and the Governor this message:
Since we never met, My name is Peter Ripley, publisher of the Ripley Report here in Port Angeles WA. There's been an heated debate here in Port Angeles regarding Fluoridation.  Forced medicating people against their will by adding a toxic substance as fluoride is just as harmful to the people and the environment as any other pollutant in our harbors. So, what are your thoughts on fluoridation in general? 

The following is what Congressman Kilmer wrote in response:
Dear Mr. Ripley,

Thank you for contacting me about fluoride in drinking water. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me.
In 1945 Grand Rapids, Michigan was the first city worldwide to add fluoride to their water system and in 1962 the U.S. Department of Public Health released a recommendation that water systems set fluoride levels to 0.7 – 1.2 parts per million because they said it promoted dental health. About 67% of people in the United States have fluoride in their publicly provided water system. The Department of Health and Human Services recently changed the recommendation to reflect that Americans now take in fluoride through several sources, whereas in the past food and water were almost the only ways for people consume fluoride.
Washington State does not require that fluoride be added to the water supply. Communities themselves are able to choose if they would like to add fluoride. Some communities – including a number of areas in Eastern Washington -- have naturally occurring fluoride and others are connected to systems that add fluoride to their water. There are more instances of this in Eastern Washington. The Washington State Department of Health monitors which water systems have fluoride and the information is available online. The Department is currently in the process of considering a new set of rules related to fluoride in drinking water. Editor's Note: Now, readers I asked Congressman Kilmer point blank about his personal feelings on the fluoridation issue and the above letter is what I got as a response. This goes to show you readers none of these big time politicians wants to make a bunch of dentist withdraw those campaign contributions, which I suspect is what is behind the response I got from Kilmer. I also wrote the the two Senators, Murray and Cantwell, along with the Governor...still no response as of yet.

break was located at the top of the ravine and washed out a large portion of the hillside exposing approximately 70 feet of water main.
2. The failed segment of pipe is a critical component to the City's water distribution
system. There are two cast iron water mains that distribute water to approximately 300 customers within the Pine Hill area. Both water mains were installed in 1955 and have similar alignments.
Repairing this main break is critical to maintain water quality and distribution redundancy,
eliminating the risk all 300 customers in the area could be without water.
3. Due to the severity of the main break, its location, and current lack of water
redundancy, an emergency is present which may necessitate activation of the City of Port Angeles Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan, including utilization of emergency powers granted

THE RIGHT TO OFFEND AND FREE SPEECH--"Je suis Charlie"

With the latest ethic's compliant leveled on the beleagered city council as of late, this complaint which was filed by Marolee Smith, is focused on the current mayor, Patrick Downie.
Reminded me of the events in Paris France 2015, in January of last year. The reason why it did because I think it addresses much of what that magazine Charlie Hebdo was cited for so many times and some tried to censor, their right to offend.
 The reason why this sort of reminded me of Charlie Magazine's message of the right to offend was this statement from Smith's speech:
 The Court said:
 “Our constitution reflects ‘a profound national commitment to the principal that a debate on public issues should be uninhibited, robust and wide-open, and that it may well include vehement caustic, and sometimes unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials’.”

Verbal attacks may be warranted. Part of the bargain in laying down arms and creating a civil society is that the people retain the right to verbally attack public officials who may be in the wrong. People retained the right to wound with words in exchange for giving up their right to wound with weapons. The very essence of First Amendment speech protections is to verbally humiliate public officials into complying with the law. --Marolee Smith quoting court ruling during speech.

Readers, I think that Feb. 2nd meeting had enough rudeness to go around, and not just from one or two city council members.

Editor's Note: She recalls two meetings these violations accord during the two meetings in January:
In the meeting of 1/05/2016, the newly elected Mayor made admonishments to the public that included all of the following:

“the public comment is a democracy, that’s the irony for me, but these discussions we have had today, personal attacks towards a specific member of council, is out of order”
“we need to be a bit more civil a bit more, as a matter of fact.”
“we welcome the public, we allow you to talk, having said that, I hope in the future, in the second public comment tonight, and subsequently you avoid personal attack, out of order, does not further the discussion.”

In the meeting of 1/19/2016, the Mayor repeatedly admonished the citizens with long-winded, chiding lecturing, and threatening (to shut down public comment if the audience doesn’t “behave”). In a five minute lecture, which included finger waving, he said, in part, all of the following:

“I am deeply saddened we are at this point in our lives, we are getting these arguments, we have to stop. We have to stop. We aren’t moving forward with the cloud of bullying, angry voice, intimidation, that’s not how I rock and roll”
“It’s a matter of principal. I am not going to be intimidated. I am not going to be bullied.”
“I am not going to be intimidated in any way into a decision”
“so long as we have this cloud of threatening to turn our town upside down”
“Threatening and angry voices.”
“YOU can do better than this, ladies and gentlemen.”
“If you are going to disrespect ME, you aren’t doing yourself any favors.”
“You’ve taken hours of our time”
“You are disrespecting my right to speak”
She, then quotes MRSC: “Make sure elected members address colleagues and not the audience. Directly addressing the audience can result in loss of control of the meeting.”
“Don't belittle small but vocal sources of opposition. Don't label people.”

Editor's Note: Now, during the February 2nd meeting, another council member labeled the mayor as the "real" mayor, seemingly making the insinuation that the deputy mayor was "fake". Why has he yet to be cited by anyone other than me?

To be fair I emailed Marolee Smith, who ran during the last city council election unsuccessfully in November the follow questions regarding Council member Lee Whetham "real mayor" comments he made during that Feb. 2nd meeting:

In all fairness, don't you think Lee Whetham also should be held to ethical standards?

Her answer: ..well, here is the thing... there was no motion to make Cherie the acting Mayor, and since the Mayor was connected via phone, he was technically "present".  That omission was against the rules.    So, Lee was making a valid point.   The Rules of Order were not observed at that meeting -- and really any business done at that meeting should be struck down and re-done, because things weren't done properly. AND, the meeting was not adjourned properly.
    ...The whole thing was a mess.
Interesting to watch, but a mess.

I responded: Ill give you that, the meeting wasn't done correctly, and should be deemed illegal and re-done,. if Whetham was so concern following protocol , and Roberts rules of order he should have been the one calling for a redo of that meeting...but he didn't. You heard what he was doing. Being disrespectful in that meeting. And yes, Downie if he was present even by phone he could have chaired that meeting, not hand it off to the deputy mayor. I am pointing out is that if one standard of ethics are not being meant, then it should be applied to all...not just those who on the other side of the fluoride issue.

Her Answer: Fluoride issue isn't the issue here, its a government that doesn't seem to be working correctly. Needs a tune up.
    And, I agree, should be applied to all.

I then asked if she cared to make further comments addressing my concerns, here is what she wrote:

Peter,
I have watched city council meetings since I was a teenager -- different cities -- and, never have I witnessed the council trying to chide, "shush" or gavel down citizens voicing their frustration.  And, the politeness here is overwhelming (just to watch a contentious matter in Berkeley, CA or any major city). People have been very respectful, even though they are frustrated and upset with the decision of the majority council members.  
   Cherie's actions, acting a Mayor, improperly (the Mayor was on the phone, and we do have statues that deal with this on the city books) without a board action, with the posting of NO SIGNS which was also never discussed, and certainly, no rule is on the books. And, then, the interruptions, the rudeness, and the pounding of the gavel was just out-of-order.
   Meanwhile, Mr. Downie trying to "reason" with the constituents in the audience (January meetings) was just crazy. Don't scold people. That is not the way that the council should act. He was ignoring the other Council members.  Collins twice asked to speak, and then actually spoke to the City Manager, who replied (completely out of control council meeting) without Mr. Downie even aware. (Collins asked if Council could get training, soon, I believe referring to the MSRC training).  Council member Whetham tried, unsuccessfully to speak, several times, but Mayor Downie just kept lecturing.   
    Calling an audience "bullies" "rude" "intimidating" is nothing that I have ever seen in a council meeting -- anywhere -- and compared to some meetings I've seen (with people marching around the chambers performing the Bellamy Salute, shouting down council, and assorted other shenanigans) our meetings are extremely "polite".  
   Democracy, even a Representational Democracy, is MESSY.  It has always been messy.  (Dictatorships are polite, by comparison, because everyone is afraid for their lives.) When we laid down our weapons, the weapon of choice became words.  We don't do coups, we voice our opinions.  If the opinion is fluoride, then so be it.   However, that is NOT THE ISSUE.  

In the Journals of the Continental Congress[1] Chauncey Ford Worthington cited: “...oppressive officers are shamed or intimidated, into more honourable and just modes of conducting affairs.”

  I am angered and outraged for the insults to our Constitution.  This isn't about fluoride. This isn't about not winning a city council race (which was fine, and we have a wonderful new Council member).  The issue is that I care about the rights of ALL CITIZENS of Port Angeles.  If we can't fix our local government, then what hope do we have of fixing anything in our country?

Editorial Note: The report focused mainly those who spoke on the Fluoride matter during the two public comment sessions. There were two who didn't speak on that subject. One person spoke how he was concerned over the divisive atmosphere which the fluoride issue as caused, and how it had effected decisions on other matters that the city is facing, such as the landfill project, the harbor clean up, and the CSO projects. He was correct in saying that both the council, and audience should tune down the divisive rhetoric that had been going on.

I also spoke during the second public comment session. For a change, I didn't speak about my opinions regarding fluoridation. Instead, I talked about my little mishap Sunday involving my wheelchair, and rain poncho, I wanted to give thanks to the police, and EMT's who assisted me out of a bad jam. Earlier in the day during the County Commission meeting, I spoke there as well wanting to thank the Sheriff deputies who also was there on Sunday in giving me aid.
During the City Council meeting Tuesday Police Chief, Terry Gallagher had a retirement send off. I wanted to make sure during the public comment session which I was able to speak to not only say thanks to the police and EMTs for assisting me, but honor Gallagher who I count as a friend by directing the audience attending to give another round of applause.
I also thanked the mayor Pat Downie, for sending that note of good will, I told him though we didn't agree over a policy decision made regarding fluoride, I did appreciate the nice gesture on his part.

Editorial note: Smith mentioned about how people don't like being lectured too by their elected officials. Well I been lectured to many times in my life, and still am, not because of policy differences, or the lack of knowledge on a subject. Some in society still are under the impression that anyone that don't fit in their little world as being "normal" are somehow inferior, to them simply because they have two good legs. Often treat disabled folks as children. So, I know the feeling of being treated as a child by those who think themselves as superior.
College professors, gives lectures every day, Church Ministers gives sermons in Church, and yes politicians gives lectures too countless times. But, how are those lectures are being presented, that's the issue I think is the point here. When you strip someone of their dignity, and talk down to them like they are children, that would cause anyone to lose their cool. I should know, I am often treated like a child because I happen to have a disability. Just something to ponder readers, before you go talking down on someone who is different that you are, how does it feel when it is done on you.

On another point in this, granted we do have the right to offend, but does it mean we should use it?
