WDFW announces changes to 2017 ocean bottomfish fishery

http://wdfw.wa.gov/news/feb1717a/
OLYMPIA – Anglers can expect changes to recreational bottomfish fisheries when ocean marine areas re-open March 11 to fishing for species such as lingcod and rockfish.
The Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) is making the changes to help ensure rockfish catches align with harvest limits adopted by the Pacific Fishery Management Council. The council is responsible for establishing conservation measures in ocean waters three to 200 miles off the Pacific coast.

Changes in effect beginning March 11 for the 2017-18 fishing season include:

Rockfish daily limit: Reduces the daily limit on rockfish to seven, from 10, in Marine Areas 1 (Ilwaco), 2 (Westport), 3 (La Push), and 4 (Neah Bay, west of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line).
Canary rockfish daily limit: Anglers fishing in Marine Areas 1 and 2 can retain one canary rockfish as part of the seven rockfish daily limit.
Bottomfish daily limit: Reduces the overall daily limit on bottomfish to nine, from 12, in Marine Areas 1 through 3 and Marine Area 4, west of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line. Rockfish count toward an angler's overall bottomfish daily limit. Anglers will be able to retain two bottomfish, such as lingcod or cabezon, in addition to their daily limit of seven rockfish.
Lingcod minimum size: Removes the 22-inch minimum size for lingcod in Marine Areas 1 through 3 and Marine Area 4, west of the Bonilla-Tatoosh line.
Deepwater lingcod closure: Reduces the size of the deepwater lingcod closure in Marine Area 1 by moving the southern boundary five miles north (to 46° 28.00' N. Lat. from 46° 33.00' N. Lat.).
WDFW is implementing the changes to daily catch limits to help ensure the conservation objective for black rockfish is met, said Michele Culver, intergovernmental ocean policy manager for the department.
"The black rockfish population remains healthy in Washington's ocean waters," Culver said. "However, we've seen an increasing number of anglers fishing for rockfish in recent years, which means more fish are being harvested than what we had estimated."
Meanwhile, anglers fishing in Marine Areas 1 and 2 now will be able to retain one canary rockfish as part of the daily limit for rockfish. Retention of canary rockfish previously had been prohibited in these areas to protect the species.
"Fortunately, the population of canary rockfish has rebounded and is now sufficient to allow harvest in areas 1 and 2," said Culver. "Anglers are still prohibited from keeping canary rockfish in Marine Areas 3 and 4, but that may change in the future."
In all four marine areas, anglers will now be able to retain lingcod regardless of fish size. Lingcod are abundant and removing the minimum size requirement is not expected to have any effect on the species' population, Culver said. The change also should benefit the yelloweye rockfish population, which is still rebuilding, by reducing encounters with the species while anglers are fishing for lingcod, she said.
Lastly, Culver said anglers should be aware that beginning July 1, they'll need to have a descending device aboard their fishing vessel in all marine areas, including the coast. Descending devices are used to release rockfish back to the depth of capture and significantly improve the survivability of fish that are released.  More information about these devices can be found on WDFW's website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fishing/bottomfish/rockfish/mortality.html

TRUMP TOOK THE MEDIA TO THE WOODSHED, AND THEY DON'T LIKE IT!

"  If we have a good relationship with Russia, believe me, that's a good thing, not a bad thing.' President Trump

Remarks by President Trump in Press Conference
https://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2017/02/16/remarks-president-trump-press-conference
Quote from the President answering question regarding Russia:
Q    President Trump, since you brought up Russia, I'm looking for some clarification here.  During the campaign, did anyone from your team communicate with members of the Russian government or Russian intelligence?  And if so, what was the nature of those conversations?
THE PRESIDENT:  Well, the failing New York Times wrote a big, long front-page story yesterday.  And it was very much discredited, as you know.  It was -- it’s a joke.  And the people mentioned in the story -- I notice they were on television today saying they never even spoke to Russia.  They weren’t even a part, really -- I mean, they were such a minor part -- I hadn’t spoken to them.  I think the one person, I don’t think I’ve ever spoken to him.  I don’t think I’ve ever met him.  And he actually said he was a very low-level member of, I think, a committee for a short period of time.  I don’t think I ever met him.  Now, it’s possible that I walked into a room and he was sitting there, but I don’t think I ever met him.  I didn’t talk to him, ever.  And he thought it was a joke.

The other person said he never spoke to Russia, never received a call.  Look at his phone records, et cetera, et cetera.  And the other person, people knew that he’d represented various countries, but I don't think he represented Russia -- but knew that he represented various countries.  That's what he does.  I mean, people know that.  That's Mr. Manafort, who's, by the way -- who's, by the way, a respected man.  He’s a respected man.  But I think he represented the Ukraine, or Ukraine government, or somebody.  But everybody -- people knew that.  Everybody knew that.  So these people -- and he said that he has absolutely nothing to do and never has with Russia.  And he said that very forcefully.  I saw his statement.  He said it very forcefully.  Most of the papers don't print it because that's not good for their stories.

So the three people that they talked about all totally deny it.  And I can tell you, speaking for myself, I own nothing in Russia.  I have no loans in Russia.  I don't have any deals in Russia.  President Putin called me up very nicely to congratulate me on the win of the election.  He then called me up extremely nicely to congratulate me on the inauguration, which was terrific.  But so did many other leaders -- almost all other leaders from almost all other countries.  So that's the extent.

Russia is fake news.  Russia -- this is fake news put out by the media.  The real news is the fact that people, probably from the Obama administration because they're there -- because we have our new people going in place right now.  As you know, Mike Pompeo is now taking control of the CIA.  James Comey at FBI.  Dan Coats is waiting to be approved.  I mean, he is a senator, and a highly respected one.  And he’s still waiting to be approved.  But our new people are going in.

And just while you're at, because you mentioned this, Wall Street Journal did a story today that was almost as disgraceful as the failing New Times’s story yesterday.  And it talked about -- you saw it, front page.  So, Director of National Intelligence just put out -- acting -- a statement:  “Any suggestion that the United States intelligence community” -- this was just given to us -- “is withholding information and not providing the best possible intelligence to the President and his national security team is not true.”

So they took this front-page story out of The Wall Street Journal -- top -- and they just wrote the story is not true.  And I’ll tell you something, I’ll be honest -- because I sort of enjoy this back and forth, and I guess I have all my life, but I’ve never seen more dishonest media than, frankly, the political media.  I thought the financial media was much better, much more honest.  But I will say that I never get phone calls from the media.  How do they write a story like that in The Wall Street Journal without asking me?  Or how do they write a story in The New York Times, put it on front page?  That was like that story they wrote about the women and me -- front page.  Big massive story.  And it was nasty.

And then they called.  They said, "We never said that.  We like Mr. Trump."  They called up my office -- we like Mr. Trump; we never said that.  And it was totally -- they totally misrepresented those very wonderful women, I have to tell you -- totally misrepresented.  I said, give us a retraction.  They never gave us a retraction.  And, frankly, I then went on to other things.

Editorial Comment: Trump took the media to the woodshed, and the liberal media doesn't like it! The question the Trump asked during the press confrence is why can't we get along with Russia? I agree with Trump that trying to get along with Russia, China, and others is a good thing. It's the Democrats, and liberal media hacks who are against getting along with Russia, and that's Ironic because so many of these media types and politicians who claim to want peace. The press decried their credibility been tarnished by Trump. Since when it's the job of the president to ensure the media credibility? Like trust, respect, credibility is earned. So, the media's credibility or lack of, was done solely by them, not the president.

Congressman Kilmer: Kilmer & Newhouse Reintroduce Bill to Fix Veterans Healthcare System Mismanagement Issues

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Representatives Derek Kilmer (D-WA) and Dan Newhouse (R-WA) reintroduced legislation to force the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) to move forward on fixes to its mismanagement issues. Their bill, the VA Management Alignment Act of 2017, would direct the head of the VA to issue a report to Congress detailing the steps they will take to reorganize and effectively improve veterans’ access to quality care.
The legislation, supported by the American Legion and the American Federation of Government Employees, follows the release of comprehensive studies that uncovered management problems at the VHA. The reports that have been issued so far by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) have uncovered problems with the VA’s human resource department and that the VA did not follow through on internal and Congressional recommendations to fix the problems of manipulated wait times and management failures. Additional reports will be released to the public this year.
“Veterans have sacrificed to protect us – we need to have their backs,” said Kilmer. “Stories and reports about manipulated wait times and mismanagement in our VA system proved that systemic reforms were needed. We are calling on the VA to address management challenges and improve care so veterans get the services they have earned.”
“Every veteran deserves the highest level of care,” said Newhouse. “The men and women who served in uniform demonstrated their willingness to sacrifice for our country, and now it’s our responsibility to ensure the VA undertakes a framework to address systemic problems. Rep. Kilmer and I are committed to ensuring our nation’s veterans have access to accountable, improved care.”
The bill from Kilmer and Newhouse calls for the VA to deliver their report to the Committees on Veterans’ Affairs of the Senate and House of Representatives within 180 days of the act’s passage. The report would spell out the roles and responsibilities for senior staff and organizational units within the VA and how they work together to promote efficiency and accountability.
In 2014, news reports came out about patient delays at the Phoenix VA and other facilities across the country. A national audit of the VA was conducted and it was found at the time that the VA Puget Sound hospital had new patients waiting 59 days – on average – for an appointment. Nearly 100,000 veterans use the VA Puget Sound system. Nationally, the audit found that 13 percent of VA schedulers reported that supervisors told them to manipulate appointments to make wait times look shorter.
The original GAO report evaluated how well the VHA followed through on recommendations to change management practices from internal and outside reviews of the organization. It also looked at how well a realignment of Veterans Integrated Service Networks (VISN) from 21 to 18 was being carried out. Each VISN oversees all VA facilities and personnel in separate regions of the country.

WH: President Donald J. Trump Names Lt. General Joseph Keith Kellogg, Jr. as Acting National Security Advisor

President Donald J. Trump has named Lt. General Joseph Keith Kellogg, Jr. (Ret) as Acting National Security Advisor following the resignation of Lt. General Michael Flynn (Ret).  General Kellogg is a decorated veteran of the United States Army, having served from 1967 to 2003, including two tours during the Vietnam War, where he earned the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with “V” device, and the Air Medal with “V” device.  He served as the Commander of the 82nd Airborne Division from 1997 to 1998.  Prior to his retirement, General Kellogg was Director of the Command, Control, Communications, and Computers Directorate under the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The full text of General Flynn’s resignation letter is below:

February 13, 2017
In the course of my duties as the incoming National Security Advisor, I held numerous phone calls with foreign counterparts, ministers, and ambassadors. These calls were to facilitate a smooth transition and begin to build the necessary relationships between the President, his advisors and foreign leaders. Such calls are standard practice in any transition of this magnitude.
Unfortunately, because of the fast pace of events, I inadvertently briefed the Vice President Elect and others with incomplete information regarding my phone calls with the Russian Ambassador. I have sincerely apologized to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology.
Throughout my over thirty three years of honorable military service, and my tenure as the National Security Advisor, I have always performed my duties with the utmost of integrity and honesty to those I have served, to include the President of the United States.
I am tendering my resignation, honored to have served our nation and the American people in such a distinguished way.
I am also extremely honored to have served President Trump, who in just three weeks, has reoriented American foreign policy in fundamental ways to restore America's leadership position in the world.
As I step away once again from serving my nation in this current capacity, I wish to thank President Trump for his personal loyalty, the friendship of those who I worked with throughout the hard fought campaign, the challenging period of transition, and during the early days of his presidency.
I know with the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Mike Pence and the superb team they are assembling, this team will go down in history as one of the greatest presidencies in U.S. history, and I firmly believe the American people will be well served as they all work together to help Make America Great Again.
Michael T. Flynn, LTG (Ret)
Assistant to the President / National Security Advisor

Editorial note: If Flynn, committed a crime here he alone should bare the brunt of prosecution, not the entire administration. That's what the liberal media like the Washington Post, NY Times, LA TIMES, and others wants, to have Trump removed from office that's the bottom line. Some of us aren't buying the song and dance of the liberal press.

UN NEWS CENTER: Opening remarks at the World Government Summit António Guterres

Ladies and Gentlemen,
It’s an enormous pleasure and an enormous honor to be here. I am very grateful to your Highness [Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum] for your very kind invitation.
If one looks at today’s governance problems at the country level, between countries or at multilateral governance in the world, we face a terrible lack of trust. Lack of trust between peoples, between governments and political establishment. Lack of trust between countries and lack of trust in relation to governance in global multilateral institutions.
Looking at country level, it is clear that globalization has been an enormous progress, complete with technological development, globalization brought a huge increase in wealth, a reduction in absolute poverty in our world, improved welfare in general, but globalization had its losers. We have the rust belts of this world. Lots of people who feel they were left behind and that the political establishments of their countries have not taken care of them. On the other hand, we see the inability to handle problems relating to the movements of people, to migration, refugees and then linkage that is made to terrorism, the feeling of insecurity and anxiety. Also, this sense that governments are not taking good care or being able to handle it properly.
We see youth, youth that is the potential of mankind. But, in many countries that have problems in relation to the capacity to find hope, to find jobs, even if they are educated, creating enormous frustrations. All this generates, in a context where also political systems have not been able to adapt to the new changes in the communication and information technologies, this has generated a gap between public opinion, societies, and governments. That is one of the factors, today, that undermines governance. And then, if we associate it, in certain societies, with corruption and other problems, we understand that we have a serious problem to handle.
Now, it is clear that reform is needed to reconcile people with political establishments; political establishment need to adapt to these technologies in information and communication; need to empower citizens and empower young people. I am a strong believer in a German philosopher, [Jurgen] Habermas, who said: “the key element of democracy is the permanent intercommunication between the political society and the civil society and the fact that the civil society influences the decision making process in the political society."

WA DFI: Investor Bulletin - Alternative Mutual Funds Are Not Typical Mutual Funds

An alert from The SEC’s Office of Investor Education and Advocacy

Alternative mutual funds (sometimes called alt funds or liquid alts) are publicly offered, SEC-registered mutual funds that hold non-traditional investments or use complex investment and trading strategies.  Investors considering alt funds should be aware of their unique characteristics and risks.

Investment Objectives:  Alternative mutual funds include a wide range of investment objectives designed to meet various investment needs.  Many alt funds try to minimize swings in the value of their investments and reduce risks by spreading their investments among different asset types and/or using complex trading strategies.  Some alt funds seek to generate above-market returns relative to other mutual funds that have a similar benchmark.
Investments:  Unlike traditional mutual funds, alt funds often seek to accomplish their investment objectives by investing in non-traditional investments.  For example, alt funds might invest in assets such as global real estate, start-up companies, or commodities such as gold or oil.  These investments can sometimes offer greater diversification or different returns than more traditional investments such as stocks, bonds, and cash.
Strategies:  Alt funds generally use more complex investment and trading strategies than more traditional mutual funds.  For example, alt funds may sell stocks short, use derivatives, or follow "absolute return" or “market neutral” strategies that seek positive returns even when the stock markets fall.  However, these strategies may result in higher costs and additional risks than traditionally managed funds.
How Do Alternative Mutual Funds Compare with Hedge Funds?

Alternative mutual funds often have similar investments and strategies to those of hedge funds, and thus alternative mutual funds may sometimes be marketed or sold as “hedge fund-like” options for retail investors.  However, alt funds differ from hedge funds in several important ways.

Regulatory safeguards:  As mutual funds, alt funds are regulated under the Investment Company Act of 1940, which provides certain safeguards.  These protections include limits on illiquid investments, restrictions on borrowings and debt, and the requirement to allow investors to sell their shares at any time.  Hedge funds are not required to follow these regulations, and therefore may pursue non-traditional strategies and investments without the same regulatory safeguards.
Open to the public:  Any investor may purchase shares of alternative mutual funds.  In contrast, hedge funds shares can only be purchased by “accredited investors” or “qualified purchasers” who are required to have a minimum level of income or assets.  This is designed to limit investors in hedge funds to those who are financially sophisticated and generally can bear the risks of investing in funds that are not subject to the regulatory safeguards.
Potentially Lower Fees:  Investors in alternative mutual funds generally pay lower fees than hedge fund investors.  Many alternative mutual funds have an annual fee equal to two percent or less of the fund’s assets.  In contrast, investors in hedge funds generally pay advisory fees at a similar level plus a percentage of any profits earned.  For example, one fee structure is the so-called 2/20 meaning an advisory fee which is generally equal to 2 percent of the fund’s assets, plus a 20 percent fee of any profits earned.

All I see Port Townsend doing here is just going along with the crowd of open border zealots, just make themselves look good. The question is will any of these council members open up their own homes to these Iranian, Iraqi, Syrian refugees? Bet, you dimes to doughnuts they won't. PATTY'S RANTS ON TRUMP'S APPOINTMENTS, AND HEALTH POLICY

Sen. Murray to President Trump: Ripping Apart Health Care System Would Hurt Washington’s Efforts to Fight Opioid Epidemic
(WASHINGTON, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) joined Senate colleagues in writing to President Donald Trump warning that repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA) with no replacement would pull the rug out from under local communities working to combat the opioid epidemic, and could endanger millions of Americans just as they are getting treatment. A repeal threatens to cut $5.5 billion in federal dollars that each year go toward treating Americans battling opioid addiction through the Medicaid expansion or the ACA marketplaces. From 2014 – 2015, drug overdose rates in Washington state increased 10.5 percent and have surpassed car crashes as the number one cause of accidental death. Over the past year, Sen. Murray has met with families, health officials, and law enforcement in communities across Washington state, including Seattle, Bellingham, Vancouver, the Tri-Cities, Yakima, and Spokane, about the urgent need to address the opioid epidemic.
“The consequences of repealing the Affordable Care Act are dire for all Americans, but they are especially calamitous for Americans living with a mental illness, a substance use disorder, or both,” the Senators wrote. “Repealing this law will cut billions of dollars in funding, kick tens of millions of Americans off of their health insurance, and saddle providers with hundreds of millions of dollars more in uncompensated care.”

Joined by Fast Food Workers and Advocates, Sen. Murray Slams President Trump’s Labor Pick as “Uniquely Unqualified”
(Washington, D.C.) – U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), top Democrat on the Senate labor committee, today held a press conference in the U.S. Capitol with fast food workers and advocates to highlight the many disqualifying aspects of the record of Andrew Puzder, President Trump’s nominee for U.S. Secretary of Labor. Puzder’s history of squeezing workers as the CEO of CKE Restaurants and his steady opposition to policies that would help workers, such as increasing the minimum wage and expanding overtime pay, raise serious questions about his ability to lead the U.S. Department of Labor.
“Puzder has spoken out against raising the minimum wage and against efforts to help more workers get overtime pay. He thinks robots would be more convenient for employers than actual workers, because robots never get sick or need a lunch break… and Mr. Puzder’s vocal defense of his deeply offensive ads—and so much more about his background—raise serious questions in my mind about his ability to represent the rights of women in the workplace, as any Secretary of Labor absolutely must be able to do,” said Senator Murray.

Sen. Murray to Vote NO on Congressman Price for Health and Human Services Secretary: Cites Serious Ethical Concerns, Long Record Seeking to Undermine Women’s Health, and His Plans to Leave Millions of Americans, Including More Than 750,000 People in Washington State, Without Health Care
(Washington, D.C.) – Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) delivered remarks on the Senate floor calling on Senate Republicans to stand with families nationwide and vote NO on the nomination of Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) for Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). Senate Republicans scheduled a final vote on the nomination of Rep. Price despite unanswered significant questions about his qualifications and ethical conduct. Senator Murray also has serious concerns about Rep. Price’s troubling plans for our health care system and health priorities crucial to women, families, and seniors nationwide. Congressman Price is a leading proponent of rushing to dismantle our health care system by repealing the Affordable Care Act, voucherize Medicare, and gutting Medicaid.

Inslee statement on President Trump executive orders restricting refugee assistance and immigration
January 25, 2017
Story
Gov. Jay Inslee today issued the following statement on President Trump’s executive orders:

“The state of Washington has a proud history of inclusivity, tolerance and compassion for all residents. Our diversity of people and cultures is a critical part of who we are, both as a state and as a nation. We will not let President Trump’s orders break faith with our state’s fundamental values.
“The president’s executive orders on immigrants signal that the better angels of our nature will not be realized. These actions, if implemented, would be mean-spirited, unnecessary and contrary to our values as Americans.
“We will not be intimidated or divided. The president this week has reminded us that people’s voices are more important than ever. Together, we will resist any effort that would violate Washington’s values, take away the opportunity for higher education or break up hard-working families.

Editorial Comment: You ask any of the supporters who are wanting refugees in this nation without being vetted first, come and live in their homes, most if not all would say no to that idea. So Washington politicians should set a good example of leadership right, by providing these people shelter in their own homes with them right? I dare say that would come up with excuses in not having these folks anywhere near their families.

WH: Remarks by President Trump in Roundtable with County Sheriffs

THE PRESIDENT:  Oh, the sheriffs are great people.  Well, thank you very much.  Law enforcement was a big subject in the campaign and a subject that was very well received.  You have no idea how respected you are, sheriffs and, generally speaking, the leaders of law enforcement.  Anybody involved in law enforcement, you have no idea how respected you are -- you don't get the honest facts from the press -- if you don't know how respected you are.  So I just want to say that upfront.
I’m honored to welcome the National Sheriffs' Association.  Your leadership is here, and I know the great job you do.  I’ve known you and followed you for a long period of time.  Your efforts and your officers are outstanding.  I know so many sheriffs from my area -- some in particular -- and they're great friends and great people.

Remarks by President Trump to Coalition Representatives and Senior U.S. Commanders
THE PRESIDENT:  Thank you very much.    Thank you, everybody.  Thank you very much.  Thank you very much.  That’s so nice.  A lot of spirit.  Great spirit for this country.  Thank you, all.  We have tremendous spirit and I want to thank you.
We had a wonderful election, didn’t we?    And I saw those numbers -- and you like me, and I like you.  That’s the way it worked.
I'm honored to be here today among so many of our really and truly great heroes.  I want to begin by thanking General Votel and General Thomas for their distinguished leadership and service on behalf of our country.  Very, very outstanding people.  I’d also like to thank General Dunford, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.  That’s big stuff, when you have the Chairman.  Where is -- Joe, stand up for a second.  This is one of the great people.   Thank you.

Statement by National Security Advisor Michael T. Flynn on Iran
Today, the United States sanctioned twenty-five individuals and entities that provide support to Iran’s ballistic missile program and to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force.
The Islamic Republic of Iran is the world’s leading state sponsor of terrorism and engages in and supports violent activities that destabilize the Middle East. This behavior seems continuous despite the very favorable deal given to Iran by the Obama Administration. These sanctions target these behaviors.

Washington Post: Bannon film outline warned U.S. could turn into ‘Islamic States of America’
The flag fluttering above the U.S. Capitol is emblazoned with a crescent and star. Chants of “Allahu Akbar” rise from inside the building.
That’s the provocative opening scene of a documentary-style movie outlined 10 years ago by Stephen K. Bannon that envisioned radical Muslims taking over the country and remaking it into the “Islamic States of America,” according to a document describing the project obtained by The Washington Post.

UN NEWS CENTER: Heavy fighting in eastern Ukraine extracting heavy civilian toll, UN Security Council hears

2 February 2017 – Briefing the Security Council on the situation in eastern Ukraine, the top United Nations political and humanitarian officials underlined today that continuing fighting in the region, with only short periods of respite, have exasperated human suffering.
“Since 7 January this year, and in particular over the last few days, we have seen a dangerous intensification of the conflict,” Jeffrey Feltman, the UN Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs told Council members today.
“The entire length of the ‘Contact Line’ has seen a serious escalation of hostilities, and there is still a risk of further deterioration of the situation,” added Mr. Feltman.
According to reports, there were more than 10,000 explosions in the Donetsk region over 24 hours, and heavy fighting has been reported near Mariupol, Popasna and the Svitlodarsk/Debaltseve areas, both in Government-controlled and non-government controlled areas, along with use of heavy weapons such as multiple-launch-rocket systems which are prohibited by the Minsk Agreements.
Furthermore, the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission has recorded damage to civilian houses and a school in populated areas of Avdiivka, raising serious concerns about possible violations of international humanitarian law by all sides.
Since the start of the conflict, almost 10,000 people have been killed (Ukrainian armed forces, civilians and members of armed groups), and over 23,000. Over 2,000 of those killed were civilians.

Teddy was right, there is no room or should no room in this nation for divided loyalties in this nation, it's either you become a full American, assimilate in our culture, and obey OUR laws, or get out!
Simple. Many today are going along with the flow of allowing those who never intend to be full fledged Americans,  honor our flag, and obey our laws, in order to make themselves to look good

I say those who want to let these people in our nation, should invite them to stay in their homes, how would that work? Like Governor Inslee of Washington State, allowed people in the state who have no great respect for our nation or laws. He should invite these people to stay with him in the governor's mansion. See if that changes his song and dance folks.

WA DFI: Dangerous W-2 Phishing Scam Evolving

The Internal Revenue Service, state tax agencies and the tax industry issued an urgent alert today to all employers that the Form W-2 email phishing scam has evolved beyond the corporate world and is spreading to other sectors, including school districts, tribal organizations and nonprofits.
In a related development, the W-2 scammers are coupling their efforts to steal employee W-2 information with an older scheme on wire transfers that is victimizing some organizations twice.
“This is one of the most dangerous email phishing scams we’ve seen in a long time. It can result in the large-scale theft of sensitive data that criminals can use to commit various crimes, including filing fraudulent tax returns. We need everyone’s help to turn the tide against this scheme,’’ said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.
When employers report W-2 thefts immediately to the IRS, the agency can take steps to help protect employees from tax-related identity theft. The IRS, state tax agencies and the tax industry, working together as the Security Summit, have enacted numerous safeguards in 2016 and 2017 to identify fraudulent returns filed through scams like this. As the Summit partners make progress, cybercriminals need more data to mimic real tax returns.
Here’s how the scam works: Cybercriminals use various spoofing techniques to disguise an email to make it appear as if it is from an organization executive. The email is sent to an employee in the payroll or human resources departments, requesting a list of all employees and their Forms W-2. This scam is sometimes referred to as business email compromise (BEC) or business email spoofing (BES).
The Security Summit partners urge all employers to be vigilant. The W-2 scam, which first appeared last year, is circulating earlier in the tax season and to a broader cross-section of organizations, including school districts, tribal casinos, chain restaurants, temporary staffing agencies, healthcare and shipping and freight. Those businesses that received the scam email last year also are reportedly receiving it again this year.

Remembering the Gipper

He would be 106 years old today.

The thing that I most admire Reagan was his way of talking to people, even when faced harsh criticism from his detractors. He had one eliminate about him that made you want to listen to him, even agree with him. That was charisma, something apparently lacking in Trump. That's why I think Trump is having all of this trouble right now, it's not what he says, it's how he says things that gets him into hot water. You never saw Reagan bashing his critics  in public, if he did he always found a way to respond with a jest. That was just his character, maybe that comes from being an actor.
The media hated him, but always left being looked upon being the weasels, while Reagan looked more classy then they were. I hope Trump will find that charisma within himself, not go have cocked with statements that only serve to put him at odds with those who would support him.

IT'S CALLED PROTECTING OUR SOVEREIGNTY!

WHERE WAS THE OUTRAGE FERGUSON WHEN YOUR PAL OBAMA DID THE SAME THING? OR WHERE WAS YOUR OUTRAGE WHEN JANET RENO SENT TROOPS TO KICK OUT A KID FROM CUBA BACK WHEN CLINTON WAS PRESIDENT?

AG FERGUSON OBTAINS COURT ORDER HALTING TRUMP IMMIGRATION ACTION

SEATTLE — A federal judge in Seattle today granted Attorney General Bob Ferguson’s request to immediately halt implementation of President Donald Trump’s Executive Order on immigration nationwide.
The Temporary Restraining Order will remain in place until U.S. District Court Senior Judge James L. Robart considers the Attorney General’s lawsuit challenging key provisions of the President’s order as illegal and unconstitutional. If Ferguson prevails, the Executive Order would be permanently invalidated nationwide.
To obtain the Temporary Restraining Order, the state needed to prove that its underlying lawsuit was likely to succeed, that irreparable harm was likely to occur without the restraining order, and that halting the President’s order immediately is in the public interest. The state also needed to establish that the potential injury to Washington residents caused by leaving the President’s order in place outweighs any potential damage from halting it.
Judge Robart, who was nominated to the court by President George W. Bush in 2003, ruled that Ferguson had met the high standards necessary to block the Executive Order until the court reaches the merits of the lawsuit.
“The Constitution prevailed today,” Ferguson said. “No one is above the law — not even the President.”

Response by the White House which was released on Face Book:
Statement by the Press Secretary:
At the earliest possible time, the Department of Justice intends to file an emergency stay of this order and defend the executive order of the President, which we believe is lawful and appropriate. The president’s order is intended to protect the homeland and he has the constitutional authority and responsibility to protect the American people.
As the law states, "Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate."

Editorial Comment: Where was Ferguson's objections when Obama done similar actions?
I have a hunch this is all about liberals not liking the idea of a president who is protection our nation from becoming a muslim nation, that is the real issue here as I see it. Even some Muslim nations are applauding this action of this president protecting our sovereignty from those who wish to destroy it.

From our Congressional Delegation: Kilmer Joins Bipartisan Letter to President Trump Asking for Clarification on Whether Federal Hiring Freeze Impacts Seasonal Firefighters

Washington D.C. – This week, U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) joined other members of the House in a bipartisan call for President Trump’s administration to answer whether the federal hiring freeze impacts seasonal firefighters. In a letter to the Office of Personnel Management the members requested clarity on whether the freeze prevents the U.S. Forest Service from hiring seasonal firefighters for wildfire season.

“As members of Congress who represent states impacted annually by wildfires, we are concerned this hiring freeze may prohibit the U.S. Forest Service from hiring seasonal firefighters and other professionals in anticipation of wildfire season,” the members wrote in the letter. “An inability to hire seasonal firefighters to combat wildfires seriously threatens public safety in our states.”

According to the National Federation of Federal Employees, the Forest Service hired at least 6,200 seasonal workers for firefighting or firefighting-related duties in 2015. These seasonal firefighters supplement state and local firefighters’ efforts to prepare for wildfire season and contain wildfires as they emerge. In order to ensure they are trained and ready for wildfire season, the Forest Service’s hiring process traditionally begins over the next several weeks with a series of job fairs in wildfire-prone states.

Kilmer Calls on House Veterans Committee to Investigate Failure of Bremerton VA Outpatient Clinic to Open on Time
Washington D.C. – U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-WA) called for the House Committee on Veterans Affairs to investigate the failure of Bremerton’s VA outpatient clinic to open in a timely manner. In a letter to Chairman Phil Roe (R-TN) and Ranking Member Tim Walz (D-MN), Kilmer urged the committee to look at the VA’s ability to construct Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) and whether other sites like Bremerton have experienced problems.
Kilmer pointed out in his letter that the VA continued to announce delays for the date the Bremerton project would be completed before ultimately terminating its contract. The VA’s actions will further delay the opening of any CBOC in the Bremerton area for another 18 months. Kilmer believes that attention from the committee might expedite the project.
“We need to get this moving. Veterans need the care they’ve earned,” said Kilmer.
Kilmer wrote in the letter: “I am greatly disappointed in the VA’s leadership and their inability to complete this project despite my continued engagement. This is especially concerning given the Committee’s actions throughout the 114th Congress, addressing the VA’s capacity and capability to address construction requirements at the VA Medical Facility in Colorado in particular. Because of the problems faced with the CBOC Bremerton and others across the nation I believe further investigation is needed. I’m encouraging you to look into the VA’s ability to follow through with outfitting and constructing CBOCs, and the Bremerton CBOC in particular.”

Schatz, Kilmer Lead Bicameral Legislation to Exempt Navy Shipyards from Federal Hiring Freeze
WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Brian Schatz (D-Hawai‘i) and U.S. Representative Derek Kilmer (D-Wash.) introduced legislation that would exempt employees of Navy public shipyards and other employees that directly support the shipyards from President Trump’s federal hiring freeze. Original cosponsors of the Senate bill include U.S. Senators Maggie Hassan (D-N.H.), Jeanne Shaheen (D-N.H.), Mazie K. Hirono (D-Hawaii), and Maria Cantwell (D-Wash.)

The Trump administration’s blanket hiring freeze is already impacting Navy shipyards, including the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. The freeze prevents shipyards across the country from hiring engineers, acquisition workforce personnel, trade mechanics, radiological and emergency personnel, regulatory compliance and other support personnel that are necessary to maintaining the Navy’s surface and submarine fleets.

“The men and women at our public shipyards work to keep the Navy’s fleets at sea and keep America safe,” said Senator Schatz. “Our shipyards already face workforce shortages and this hiring freeze will only worsen their ability to get our ships and submarines back out on deployment. Our bill will help reverse this and give Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and shipyards across the country the freedom to hire the people they need to support the Navy and its mission.”

WHAT'S WRONG IN WANTING TO PROTECT GOD GIVEN FREE WILL?

Something liberals, and the liberal media establishment will never understand..

AG FERGUSON SEEKS HALT TO TRUMP’S IMMIGRATION EXECUTIVE ORDER
SEATTLE — Attorney General Bob Ferguson announced that he is filing a lawsuit in federal court today against President Donald Trump, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and high-ranking Trump Administration officials. Ferguson’s complaint asks the United States District Court for the Western District of Washington to declare unconstitutional key provisions of President Donald Trump’s immigration Executive Order.
http://www.atg.wa.gov/news/news-releases/ag-ferguson-seeks-halt-trump-s-immigration-executive-order
Editorial Note: What Fergusion can't seem to comprehend is that Trump is trying to do in my opinion to protect our way of life here, to oppose those who want to impose Sharia law on us, who don't believe in what they believe. We live under God given liberties to believe or not to believe. God doesn't force himself on anyone. We should practice that too, by not forcing our believes on others, too bad not all agrees with that thought, some want us to worship the way they do, or die! I stand by, the bill of rights, and Jesus, not a pretender. Ferguson will never understand that I don't think, he like so many Trump critics wants to overturn an election because they didn't like the outcome of an election. Which is childish and petty. What I been saying over, and over again, you can't convert people to your religion by a point of a weapon, one religion does Islam, does anyone think that is how they win so many converts? I dare say not by actual believe but by death threats! Is that what we really want?
The following is a article from the Truth for the World you may consider: Jesus or Mohammed?
One of the fastest growing religions in the world today is Islam. Islam began in Arabia in 622 A.D. It was started by Mohammed, a camel driver who could not read or write. Mohammed became discouraged with idol worship in his home city of Mecca. He had learned from Jews and Christians that there is only one true God.
http://truthfortheworld.org/jesus-or-mohammed

Editorial comment: You convert people through study, and debate, not force of arms readers. Now some may say we shouldn't be passing judgement on other beliefs, here is another article by The Gospel Way: Criticizing Other People's Religion
We frequently hear people say, "I don't believe in criticizing other people's religion." Some people become angry - even violent - when people criticize their beliefs. Surely we should not condemn beliefs that are pleasing to God, but does this mean we should even avoid pointing out the religious errors of others?
http://www.gospelway.com/topics/teaching/criticizing_others.art.php

Editorial note: These articles are not meant to sound mean or hateful, they're pointing out truths that people should read and consider. I'm not trying to sound mean or hateful either, I just like the idea of a religious sect coming to this nation to override our bill of rights to suit them, and impose their beliefs on others, simple as that. If they want to come and assimilate in our culture, and obey OUR laws that's one thing, all fine and good. Let me put it this way, it would be like me trying forcing at gunpoint for everyone to read this publication or else! That's what you get under Sharia law, either you follow our ways or else! I think people are too blinded from their destain toward Trump to see the real threat. So I ask, what's wrong in wanting to protect our God given rights of free will?

Yates issued a memorandum barring Department of Justice Attorney’s from presenting arguments in defense of the President’s January 27, 2017, Executive Order entitled “Protecting the Nation from Foreign Terrorist Entry Into the United States.” At approximately 9:00 p.m., I was asked by the President to serve in the capacity of Acting Attorney General. After having dedicated the last thirty-three years of my life to this Department, I am humbled and incredibly honored to serve as Acting Attorney General. Editorial comment: Of course the former Attorney General sings Yates praises, they were both doing the bidding of Obama, and his affairs while President. Yates got caught doing Obama's bidding, and was canned for doing it. Need I remind you that Obama did the same thing in banning refugees from terrorist infested countries coming here. Neither of these two made a whimper about Obama's restrictions on refugees. Matter in fact they cheered his bans, so what does that tell you? They were selective in their objections. If these two "ladies" were outrage about bans being imposed on refugees, they would go against those edicts from the previous administration who did the same thing.

WELL PLAYED PRESIDENT TRUMP IF THAT WAS THE INTENT.

Another look at Trump's presidential action regarding muslims entering the country.
(Note: no where in the action mentions the word Muslims, that was all media driven drivel to make Trump look like some kind of tyrant.)

Homeland Security: Protecting The Nation From Foreign Terrorist Entry To The United States
Action
For the next 90 days, nearly all travelers, except U.S. citizens, traveling on passports from Iraq, Syria, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Libya, and Yemen will be temporarily suspended from entry to the United States. The 90 day period will allow for proper review and establishment of standards to prevent terrorist or criminal infiltration by foreign nationals.
Importantly, however, Lawful Permanent Residents of the United States traveling on a valid I-551 will be allowed to board U.S. bound aircraft and will be assessed for exceptions at arrival ports of entry, as appropriate.  The entry of these individuals, subject to national security checks, is in the national interest. Therefore, we expect swift entry for these individuals.
In the first 30 days, DHS will perform a global country-by-country review of the information each country provides when their citizens apply for a U.S. visa or immigration benefit. Countries will then have 60 days to comply with any requests from the U.S. government to update or improve the quality of the information they provide.
DHS and the Department of State have the authority, on a case-by-case basis, to issue visas or allow the entry of nationals of these countries into the United States when it serves the national interest.  These seven countries were designated by Congress and the Obama Administration as posing a significant enough security risk to warrant additional scrutiny in the visa waiver context.
The Refugee Admissions Program will be temporarily suspended for the next 120 days while DHS and interagency partners review screening procedures to ensure refugees admitted in the future do not pose a security risk to citizens of the United States.
The Executive Order does not prohibit entry of, or visa issuance to, travelers with diplomatic visas, North Atlantic Treaty Organization visas, C-2 visas for travel to the United Nations, and G-1, G-2, G-3, and G-4 visas.
The Department of Homeland Security along with the Department of State, the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation will develop uniform screening standards for all immigration programs government-wide.
Upon resumption of the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, refugee admissions to the United States will not exceed 50,000 for fiscal year 2017.
The Secretary of Homeland Security will expedite the completion and implementation of a biometric entry-exit tracking system of all travelers into the United States.

Then on Sunday, this bit of news came into view...
Saudi king agrees in call with Trump to support Syria, Yemen safe zones: White House
Saudi Arabia's King Salman, in a telephone call on Sunday with U.S. President Donald Trump, agreed to support safe zones in Syria and Yemen, a White House statement said. Trump, during his presidential campaign last year, had called for Gulf states to pay for establishing safe zones to protect Syrian refugees. (REU)
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-trump-saudi-idUSKBN15D14L

Editorial note: If that was the endgame of the above presidential order, to force these Gulf states to aid in taking Syrian refugees, then it was a clever move on Trump's part. The Democrats can't take the moral high ground on such actions it deals with national security, they too took punitive action against refugees fleeing tyrants, as far back in recent history back during FDR's presidency, when he turned back Jews fleeing persecution from nazi Germany, yet back then not a peep from the media back in those days condemning that action, or when FDR, established those internment camps for Japanese Americans shortly Pearl Harbor was attacked, fearing possible attacks from within. Yet Roosevelt never been called a tyrant in doing any of those actions. Other Democrat presidents also banned refugees coming to this country, reasons were national security, yet they never been hounded by the press. Double standard for sure.
This isn't about refusing people in this nation who wants a better life for themselves, this is about in my opinion of letting people in this nation who has no intention of following our laws, but wanting have us to adopt Sharia law, taking away our God given liberties we been enjoying for over 230 years. That's the issue. If they want to come and assimilate into our culture, follow the law of the land which is our US Constitution, and bill of rights, then by all means. That is what most immigrants coming to this nation as always done, to obey our laws, not adopt a religion over our liberties. The immigrants came to help build our nation, not set out to destroy it.

Folks shouldn't jump to conclusions over Presidential orders

The liberal media is making fools out of themselves as usual

National Review: Trump’s Executive Order on Refugees — Separating Fact from Hysteria
Finally, you can read the entire executive order from start to finish, reread it, then read it again, and you will not find a Muslim ban. It’s not there. Nowhere. At its most draconian, it temporarily halts entry from jihadist regions. In other words, Trump’s executive order is a dramatic climb-down from his worst campaign rhetoric.

Actual orders from White House webpage:
Executive Order: Enhancing Public Safety in the Interior of the United States
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA) (8 U.S.C. 1101 et seq.), and in order to ensure the public safety of the American people in communities across the United States as well as to ensure that our Nation's immigration laws are faithfully executed, I hereby declare the policy of the executive branch to be, and order, as follows:

Section 1.  Purpose.  Interior enforcement of our Nation's immigration laws is critically important to the national security and public safety of the United States.  Many aliens who illegally enter the United States and those who overstay or otherwise violate the terms of their visas present a significant threat to national security and public safety.  This is particularly so for aliens who engage in criminal conduct in the United States.

Sanctuary jurisdictions across the United States willfully violate Federal law in an attempt to shield aliens from removal from the United States.  These jurisdictions have caused immeasurable harm to the American people and to the very fabric of our Republic.

Tens of thousands of removable aliens have been released into communities across the country, solely because their home countries refuse to accept their repatriation.  Many of these aliens are criminals who have served time in our Federal, State, and local jails.  The presence of such individuals in the United States, and the practices of foreign nations that refuse the repatriation of their nationals, are contrary to the national interest.

Although Federal immigration law provides a framework for Federal-State partnerships in enforcing our immigration laws to ensure the removal of aliens who have no right to be in the United States, the Federal Government has failed to discharge this basic sovereign responsibility.  We cannot faithfully execute the immigration laws of the United States if we exempt classes or categories of removable aliens from potential enforcement.  The purpose of this order is to direct executive departments and agencies (agencies) to employ all lawful means to enforce the immigration laws of the United States.

Executive Order: Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Improvements:
By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including the Immigration and Nationality Act (8 U.S.C. 1101 et seq.) (INA), the Secure Fence Act of 2006 (Public Law 109 367) (Secure Fence Act), and the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (Public Law 104 208 Div. C) (IIRIRA), and in order to ensure the safety and territorial integrity of the United States as well as to ensure that the Nation's immigration laws are faithfully executed, I hereby order as follows:

Section 1.  Purpose.  Border security is critically important to the national security of the United States.  Aliens who illegally enter the United States without inspection or admission present a significant threat to national security and public safety.  Such aliens have not been identified or inspected by Federal immigration officers to determine their admissibility to the United States.  The recent surge of illegal immigration at the southern border with Mexico has placed a significant strain on Federal resources and overwhelmed agencies charged with border security and immigration enforcement, as well as the local communities into which many of the aliens are placed.

Transnational criminal organizations operate sophisticated drug- and human-trafficking networks and smuggling operations on both sides of the southern border, contributing to a significant increase in violent crime and United States deaths from dangerous drugs.  Among those who illegally enter are those who seek to harm Americans through acts of terror or criminal conduct.  Continued illegal immigration presents a clear and present danger to the interests of the United States.

Federal immigration law both imposes the responsibility and provides the means for the Federal Government, in cooperation with border States, to secure the Nation's southern border.  Although Federal immigration law provides a robust framework for Federal-State partnership in enforcing our immigration laws    and the Congress has authorized and provided appropriations to secure our borders    the Federal Government has failed to discharge this basic sovereign responsibility.  The purpose of this order is to direct executive departments and agencies (agencies) to deploy all lawful means to secure the Nation's southern border, to prevent further illegal immigration into the United States, and to repatriate illegal aliens swiftly, consistently, and humanely.

WA Commerce Dept: Millions of Dollars in Earned Income Tax Credits Go Unclaimed Each Year by Working Americans

Many people are eligible for a tax refund of up to $6,269 from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and do not claim it. Gov. Jay Inslee proclaimed tomorrow, Jan. 27 “Earned Income Tax Credit Day in Washington State” as part of a nationwide effort to increase awareness of this underused tax credit and how to apply for it.
You must file a federal tax return with the IRS to get your Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), even if you do not owe any tax or are not required to file.
Twenty percent of those eligible for the credit either do not claim it or do not file a tax return at all. The credit reduces the amount of taxes owed and results in a lump sum refund payment for most people who are eligible to claim it.
“As one of the largest anti-poverty programs in the United States, it is critical to raise awareness of this opportunity, not just for individuals and families, but also to strengthen our state’s economy,” Inslee said.
Last year 436,000 people in Washington applied for the credit, claiming close to $956 million in refunds and generating about $1.43 billion for our state’s economy. Even so, an estimated $270 million in federal tax credits go unclaimed in Washington.
“This year individuals can receive a tax refund of up to $6,269 if they meet eligibility requirements,” said Brian Bonlender, director of the Department of Commerce. “For over 40 years, the Earned Income Tax Credit has lifted working families out of poverty and strengthened communities throughout the state. I encourage everyone to learn more and see if you qualify.”

VETERANS: Sen. Murray Urges President Trump to Uphold Campaign Promise and Put Veterans First, Exempt Entire VA from Federal Hiring Freeze
(Washington, D.C.) —Today, Senator Patty Murray (D-WA), a senior member of the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, joined members of both the Senate and House to demand President Trump exempt the entire Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) and all veterans seeking federal jobs from his executive order that freezes federal hiring. The members’ letter emphasized that the hiring freeze will add to the chronic workforce shortages that are plaguing the VA, and that more doctors, nurses and administrative staff are needed at VA facilities to reduce wait times across the country and make payments on time. Washington state VA facilities have reported at least 300 current job openings. According to the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee, the VA has reported it currently has more than 45,000 vacancies nationwide.

“At a time when we are working to help veterans get the care they earned in their service to our country, this action would only impede the department’s ability to follow through, including at facilities in our state,” said Senator Murray. “I strongly urge President Trump not to break the promise he made to put veterans first while he was on the campaign trail, and exempt the VA from the hiring freeze to allow caretakers, claim processors, and so many others to be hired and get to work.”

IMMIGRATION: Sen. Murray Statement on President Trump’s Executive Orders Issued Today
(Washington, D.C.) –  Today, U.S. Senator Patty Murray (D-WA) issued the following statement after President Trump issued executive orders concerning immigration, including ramping up immigration raids that tear families apart, constructing a wall on the border between U.S. and Mexico, and punishing cities that prioritize local control of policing and public safety.

“It’s deeply disappointing but not surprising to see President Trump turn his divisive, campaign rhetoric into the actions we are seeing today. There’s no question the U.S. immigration system is in need of a serious overhaul, but targeting hard-working families, constructing an extremely costly wall, and burdening law enforcement in cities in Washington state and across our country does not even begin to address the complexities of this issue and in fact could set us back. I urge this Administration and the Republicans in Congress to work with Democrats on comprehensive immigration reform that truly works for families, for the economy, and for the security of our country.”

Murray, Cantwell Join Bipartisan Group of Senators to Introduce Global HER Act to Permanently Repeal the Global Gag Rule
WASHINGTON, D.C.  – After President Trump issued an executive order to reinstate the Global Gag Rule on Monday, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) joined their colleagues Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH), Susan Collins (R-ME), and 39 other senators to introduce the Global Health, Empowerment, and Rights (HER) Act, which would permanently repeal the harmful policy.

The Global Gag Rule, also known as the Mexico City Policy, bans federal funds for foreign non-governmental organizations that provide abortion services or provide information about abortion as part of comprehensive family planning services, forcing clinics to choose between providing limited reproductive health services while accepting U.S. foreign aid or providing inclusive family planning and reproductive healthcare with a limited budget. The executive order expanded the policy from the Bush Administration to apply to every program that falls under global health assistance at the Department of State, USAID and the Department of Health and Human Services.

“There are few Republican traditions more shameful that restricting access to reproductive health care in ways that most burden women who can least afford it—and President Trump’s expansion of the global gag rule, which would threaten the lives of women worldwide, is unfortunately a clear continuation,” said Senator Murray. “I’m proud to support the Global HER Act and I’m going to fight every step of the way against extreme policies that would take women backwards, here at home and abroad.”

“It is unfortunate President Trump is attacking women’s healthcare just days into his presidency,” said Senator Cantwell. “I support a woman’s right to choose, and am proud to co-sponsor this bill putting an end to the Global Gag rule. This rule impacts women around the globe who will be cut off from services essential to leading a healthy life.”

Murray, Cantwell Join Bipartisan Letter to Exempt Puget Sound Naval Shipyard & Navy Shipyards Around the Country from Federal Hiring Freeze
Recent presidential memorandum signed by President Trump may have serious implications for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard
WASHINGTON, D.C.  – Today, U.S. Senators Patty Murray (D-WA) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA), joined by Senator Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) and five senate colleagues, sent a letter to Secretary of Defense James Mattis. The senators are calling for Department of Navy shipyard civilian employees to be exempt from the recent presidential memorandum signed by President Trump that freezes federal hiring.
While the President’s memorandum states that it does not apply to military personnel or positions considered essential to meet national security responsibilities, the uncertainty has caused shipyards across the country to suspend all hiring.
The consequences of the hiring freeze may be particularly harsh for Puget Sound Naval Shipyard (PSNS) in Bremerton because of the size of the workforce, the number of vacancies, and the importance of the shipyard to Washington state’s $30 billion dollar maritime economy.
