US DEPT. OF EDUCATION: Secretary DeVos Accepts President Trump’s Q2 Salary as a Donation for STEM-Focused Camp
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED 7/ 26/ 17
WASHINGTON – Today, President Donald J. Trump donated his second quarter salary to the Department of Education to help fund a STEM-focused camp for students. The donation, totaling $100,000, was accepted by Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos at the daily White House Press briefing where she delivered the following remarks:
“I want to start by saying how grateful I am to the President for this generous gift. The President has truly shown his commitment to our nation’s students and to reforming education in America so that every child, no matter their ZIP code, has access to a high quality education.
“He and I have had many conversations about how best to put students’ needs first and to ensure we are setting them up for a lifetime of success. There is much work to be done, but we are certainly on the right track thanks to the President’s leadership.
“Just yesterday, Ivanka Trump and I hosted a summer reading event at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History where the focus was on getting young girls, ages 6-10, excited about learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. It was fun to see their eyes light up as they got to explore, create and experiment in a collaborative environment.
“Today’s and tomorrow’s economy requires engaged students, boys and girls, are prepared for STEM careers. That’s why we have decided to use the President’s 2nd quarter salary to host a STEM-focused camp for students at the Department of Education. We want to encourage as many children as possible to explore STEM fields in the hope that many develop a passion for these fields.
“We look forward to this exciting endeavor. Again, thank you to President Trump for this generous gift.
Secretary DeVos Announces Recipients of the 2017 President’s Education Awards Program
Nearly 3 Million Elementary, Middle and High School Graduates at More Than 30,000 Schools Nationwide Receive This Prestigious Award
PRESS RELEASE ISSUED 7/ 21/ 17
U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos today congratulated the 2017 President's Education Awards Program (PEAP) recipients, recognizing nearly 3 million elementary, middle and high school graduates for their educational accomplishments. These students represent more than 30,000 public, private and military schools from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and the Outlying Areas – American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands and the Virgin Islands.
"The future of America lies in the strength of our students, so it is a pleasure to recognize and celebrate the academic achievements of our nation's next generation of leaders," said Secretary DeVos. "All of you have proven your commitment to furthering your education, and this award is a testament to your perseverance, long hours of study and passion."
"President Donald Trump and I encourage each of you to not treat education as a path with a definitive end, but one that you will continue for your entire lives. There is always more to learn, study and gain, and I'm confident you will continue to find the rewards education can provide long after you've left the classroom."
PEAP was founded in 1983. Every year since then, the program has provided America's schools with the opportunity to recognize graduating students who meet high standards of academic excellence and those who have given their best effort, often overcoming obstacles to their learning.
Each year, eligible graduating K-12 students are selected by their school principal for recognition in two categories.
The President's Award for Educational Excellence - This award recognizes academic success in the classroom. To be eligible, students must meet requirements, including grade point average or school-set criteria and choice of state tests or teacher recommendations.
The President's Award for Educational Achievement - This award recognizes students that show outstanding educational growth, improvement, commitment or intellectual development in their academic subjects but do not meet the criteria for the Educational Excellence Award. Its purpose is to encourage and reward students who give their best effort, often in the face of special obstacles. Criterion for this award is developed at each school.
Individual recognition is bestowed by the President and the U.S. Secretary of Education, in partnership with the National Association of Elementary School Principals and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The award includes a congratulatory letter to the student and certificate signed by the President, the Secretary and the school principal.
Unlike other awards programs, the principal has sole discretion in choosing recipients based on eligibility. There is no limit on the number of awards, as long as students meet the criteria for each award set by the school.

US CHAMBER OF COMMERCE: Promoting Disability Employment Around the Globe

President and CEO, U.S. Chamber of Commerce

The U.S. sets a powerful example for the world by the way we promote and protect the rights of our citizens with disabilities to contribute to our economy. Unfortunately, many nations still lag behind in their treatment of people with disabilities. That’s why the U.S. Chamber of Commerce is highlighting how American businesses—as they always do—are taking the lead in finding solutions to this problem, even without any legal obligation to do so.
Last week the Chamber hosted the Global Disability Employment Summit, where we featured many inspiring companies that are voluntarily opening up opportunities for workers with disabilities around the globe. While navigating a patchwork of laws and regulations abroad, these companies are taking practical steps to include people with disabilities in their workplaces and as important segments of their customer bases. They are diversifying their supply chains and working with disability-owned businesses.
These businesses represent some of the world’s most valuable brands, and they are leading the way not just because it is a good thing to do but because it is the smart thing to do. It increases their competitive edge and strengthens their bottom lines. We were proud to have these companies at the Chamber last week to share their advice, experiences, and best practices. They told an audience of public- and private-sector leaders what works and what doesn’t, and how it is possible to create truly inclusive workplaces and help people with disabilities thrive.
Many American businesses remain hopeful for a global solution to this challenge. In 2012, the Chamber was a proud proponent of the United Nations Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities, a treaty that would have helped bring other countries up to speed in their treatment of citizens with disabilities. When the treaty came before the U.S. Senate, however, it failed to achieve the two-thirds majority necessary for ratification.
Since then, we’ve seen that American companies don’t wait for a mandate or a rule to do the right thing. They are proud to hire and retain workers with disabilities and make their services and premises more accessible to all. Globally, there are many people with disabilities who still need to be given a fair chance. They offer tremendous untapped talent and potential. The Chamber will continue spreading the message that as long as these individuals are kept on the sidelines of the workforce, economies and companies worldwide will miss out.
US DEPT. OF LABOR BLOG: The ADA at 27: Strengthening the American Workforce

Wednesday marked the 27th anniversary of a milestone in our nation’s history − the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Signed by President George H.W. Bush, this landmark legislation prohibited employment discrimination on the basis of disability and helps to ensure all Americans have equal access to good, safe jobs.
As Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights, I had the honor of working with the disability community and employers to create a work environment open to all. As Secretary of Labor, I have the privilege of continuing this work in many ways, one of which is by connecting job creators and job seekers. Employers know that workplace accessibility is not something that is done simply to comply with the law. Workplace accessibility provides a business advantage. It provides access to a talent pool that makes businesses stronger and more competitive.
There are currently about 6 million open jobs in the U.S. It’s estimated that American companies are missing out on nearly $250 billion because of these unfilled jobs. Now is the time for businesses to realize the untapped potential of the more than 500,000 Americans with disabilities who are seeking jobs right now.
President Trump understands this. He is committed to helping Americans pursue their career of choice by making workplaces more accessible and workforce education more inclusive to those with disabilities. The President’s first budget proposal directs the Department of Labor to help states test strategies to enable recently disabled workers to stay in their current employment. Early intervention is key and will be a focus of the research and state demonstration projects.
The President also signed an Executive Order on apprenticeships to close the skills gap and ensure the American workforce is prepared to succeed in the jobs of today and tomorrow. The Department of Labor will work with industry groups, companies, unions, nonprofits and educational institutions to increase the number of quality apprenticeships in the U.S. Apprenticeships and workforce development programs such as these should and will be open to all Americans of all abilities.
A job is about more than just income. Work is a source of pride; it gives men and women the ability to provide for their families and make our local communities better places. The Department of Labor and the Office of Disability Employment Policy are committed to ensuring that more Americans with disabilities experience the independence, pride, and community that come with having a job.
