Haggen to close Port Angeles store, lay off 67 workers on May 10---PDN dated 3.13.16
Editorial Comment: Yesterday, a reader expressed her concerns over the fact that with the pending closure of the Albertsons/Haggen store, the west side of town will be without the convenience of a grocery store nearby. No one likes to see a grocery store close their doors, or 67 people loose their jobs on account of decisions being made on a national corporate level. Grocery stores which are own by big corporations calls the shots of what stores are going to be closed, and there is very little what the local governments can do about it. The governing body of the community can only foster a positive business climate that will attract big corporations to invest in the town. They look at things like does the city have good schools, clean drinking water, property taxes, and industrial Infrastructure that will support their business in the long term. When corporations see schools falling apart and not being replaced with new schools, or when they see the community as a whole not supporting the back bone of their community which is industry they tend to shy away from investing in that community. Plus things like force feeding the public medicated water also plays into that factor. Let alone property taxes and utility rates. When they see things like governmental bodies not allowing the sale of property to expand an already existing industry, they tend to also look on that too, and wonder is it worth our corporation to invest in that community?
